What is culture?
Last semester was spent with a lot of self-reflection about traits, styles and skills. It was also my first time being exposed to what leadership is and how many different ways and contexts in which it takes place. This semester is LEAD 301 is taking everything a step further, from an intrapersonal perspective to an interpersonal perspective. This combined with my extra experience in the Multicultural Leadership Program on campus has allowed me to consider my identities in the broader social context. It is impossible to separate or ignore the fact that we all come from different backgrounds and have different identities and even the salience of these identities varies from individual to individual.
Culture can be a beautiful thing but it also has the power to cause destruction. This TedTalk discusses how people naturally form groups, we are social beings and we like those who are like us. However, in our day to day lives we will encounter others who are very different from us. On the road to cultural competence and great leadership, it is important to learn about these things. This LEADership experience has already changed the way I look at the world and I'm hoping that I will now be able to begin to apply it to what I want to do in the future, practice therapy and allow people to get the most out of their lives.
